Content

The lecture focuses on the role of empirical methods in software engineering. It introduces the most common empirical methods and highlights typical sources of error in empirical studies. The associated statistical methods for analyzing and presenting data are also taught. The lecture uses a range of scientific publications to illustrate and bring the concepts to life.

Qualification Goals

  • Be able to describe empirical methods in software engineering, identify sources of error, and specify avoidance strategies
  • Be able to explain and apply statistical analysis methods
  • Be able to analyze and evaluate empirical studies
  • Be able to cite and explain examples of empirical studies from software engineering
  • Be able to plan and conduct empirical studies
